Not everyone’s definition of a winter getaway involves beach, sand or surf. For snow bunnies who love a good old-fashioned wintry wonderland getaway, Booking.com has compiled a list of the best last-minute destinations for rolling around in the snow, donning ski or skate, and sipping on a mug of marshmallow-topped hot chocolate in your cosiest wool sweater.

Lapland, Finland

During March and April, a brilliant winter sun allows visitors to ski or sleigh for between 12 to 16 hours a day. Thanks to its northerly location, the best skiing in Lapland actually starts in February and lasts straight through until May. Activities include everything from downhill or cross-country skiing, dogsled or skimobile safaris, ice skating and ice-fishing.

Keldur, Iceland

From ice caves, glacier hiking, geothermal waters and the Northern Lights, the land of fire and ice offers nature lovers unique experiences that are distinct to Iceland. The area in south Iceland is also home to traditional, old sod or turf houses.

Chamonix Valley, France

This one’s for ski bunnies. With mountain peaks as tall as 16,000 feet, Chamonix Valley is a resort area in France that is easily accessible by Italy and Switzerland and shines brightly in winter. Highlights include Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi Skywalk, a glass-enclosed room suspended over a 1,000-meter precipice that claims to be the highest attraction in Europe.

Sun Peaks, British Columbia, Canada

Skip the prices and crowds of Whistler for a calmer, quieter winter stay at Sun Peaks. A mountain resort municipality of a different kind, Sun Peaks is described as a European-style, ski-through village filled with shops, cafes and eateries. The 4,270 acres of skiable terrain are also characterized by deep steeps, long cruisers, gladed areas, powder stashes and corduroy gamers.
