Early look at fall fashion

Chunky turtlenecks and puffer coats may not be on your mind, but it’s never too early to look ahead to the fall fashion season. We picked five trends that are showing up in women’s clothing that is available now or will be in the coming weeks and months. These trends were also spotted on runways last February when designers unveiled their Fall/Winter 2017-18 collections during New York Fashion Week – often in more dramatic or exaggerated forms, of course.

This is only a short list, but it’s a start if you’re looking for a few new ideas – and some that are carrying over from previous seasons. Embroidered denim, anyone?

Statement sleeves. If you thought designers had a heyday with cutout sleeves this summer, wait until you see what’s in store for fall. As in previous seasons, statement sleeves continue to be a trend. Bell sleeves, dolman sleeves, balloon sleeves with cuffs, voluminous sleeves with lace-ups, ruffles, pleats and bows … they’re all out there. Bell sleeves appear on blousey tops as well as dresses; some are quite exaggerated so keep them out of the soup. Gap shows a hooded utility jacket with dolman sleeves. And, yes, you will see even more cutout sleeves and cold-shoulder styles. For late summer and fall, you could keep with a few basic bottoms and just add some of these statement tops to update your look.

Oversized. Sleeves aren’t the only things that are generously proportioned. Shapes in general leave you room to breathe rather than being skintight. Boxy jackets. Longer, fuller skirts. Wider pant legs. Sack dressing does not appear to be the goal here, but fashion in many cases is loosening up. Elle.com specifically noted the broad shoulders on oversized menswear-style blazers on the runways and shared this in its trends report: “You’re not borrowing from the boys this season, but from the men. Grandpas, to be exact.”

Fringe. When you think fringe for fall, what first comes to mind may be strips of suede swinging off handbags or Western-inspired jackets, vests and boots. While there is some of that, fringe also showed up on the designer runways for evening. During New York Fashion Week, both the Marchesa and Michael Kors collections included fancy attire styled with long fringe; Vogue.com called Kors’ finale dress modeled by Kendall Jenner – a strapless sequined dress adorned with floor-length swirling fringe – “the party dress of the week.” Off the runways, you’ll see fringe on boldly patterned ponchos (Chico’s), dressy sleeveless tops (Talbots) and kimonos (Target). Floral prints aren’t just for spring and summer. The Candie’s moto jacket is expected to arrive at Kohl’s this fall.

Fall florals. If the end of summer gardening season always makes you sad, take comfort in knowing you can wear floral prints through fall. Roses and other blooms are showing up in deeper autumnal colors, rather than bright spring hues. While not all florals are big and splashy, some are. Elle.com calls them Couch Florals. “Designers looked to their aunt’s living room this season, applying vintage floral prints to everything from casual tops to princess gowns.” We even spotted them on ankle boots. Look, too, for embroidered flowers on jeans and denim jackets (in case you don’t already have them in your closet).

Jewel tones. It’s been said that there is a jewel tone to flatter everyone; just think of how many we have seen on the red carpets through the years (actress Julianne Moore in emerald green, for starters). For fall, jewel tones made a big showing on the New York runways – both in solids and in prints – and you’ll be seeing more of them in the coming weeks and months. Sapphire blue. Ruby red. Dark opal. Yellow topaz. Rich amethyst. Fall could be a good time to experiment – and find the perfect shade for you.
