Yes, we admit it – it may be a little early to be thinking about getting away to a tropical beach, but here at Airdrie Public Library (APL) we believe in the importance of equipping oneself with knowledge, especially before embarking on a big adventure.

As such, APL has a robust section on travelling, featuring guidebooks from Fodors, Moon, Frommers, Rough Guides and others.

Among them, you’ll find helpful information on places like Paris, Fiji, New Zealand, Cuba and just about anywhere else a human being could desire to travel.

If you’ve travelled at all, you’ll know how helpful – or sometimes not-so-helpful these guidebooks can be – but just imagine how much more useful it would be to have a face-to-face conversation with someone who has travelled all over the world and done it successfully.

Well, your library has such a thing!

From 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 21, APL is hosting Travel to Save Your Life, a one-off event intended for novice adult vacationers.

Hosted by experienced travellers, the session covers travel issues such as documentation requirements, flight options, packing, accommodations, site-seeing, local transportation and customs, safety and women’s concerns.

By the end of these two hours, participants will have gained the knowledge necessary to plan and execute a successful overseas holiday.

So, yes, it’s early in the season, but it’s never too early to dream about what could be the adventure of a lifetime.

Also happening Sept. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., is APL’s Paint Night fundraiser.

Local artist Alicia Taylor will be demonstrating a step-by-step painting workshop, where participants will come away with their very own masterpiece.

The cost is $40, payable beforehand at the Customer Service desk, and covers all materials and refreshments.
