House of the Week: 64 Parkway Avenue, Cooks Hill
Agent Scott Walkom described it as “unique” and “arguably the best home in Cooks Hill”.
The residence stands out from the street, mostly for its size and art deco architecture.
But the space and sophistication of the home on the corner of Parkway Avenue and Dawson Street cannot be truly appreciated until you step through the front gate and behind the manicured hedges which surround the property and provide ultimate privacy.
The home, at 64 Parkway Avenue, is being marketed by Walkom Real Estate through an expressions of interest campaign with interest expected to come midway between $5 million and $6 million.
It was built in 1936 and the owners, who wished to remain anonymous, believed it was designed by Emil Sodersten, a prominent Australian architect of the art deco era.
It has had four owners in its time, all of which have had lengthy stays. The current owners have been there for the past 17 years and conceded “it will be hard to leave” but are downsizing after raising a family there.
Once through the formal entryway the home, which sits on a level block 1296 square metres in size, reveals itself as an ultimate family sanctuary.

It has six bedrooms, four bathrooms, multiple indoor and outdoor living areas and is dripping with traditional charm and classic elegance.
The home features a timber staircase which reportedly took 12 months to build on site, high ceilings, wide skirting boards, fireplaces, stepped cornices and french doors which open up to the rear lawn and luxury inground swimming pool.
From the pool looking back at the residence, it would not be out of place in Bellevue Hill and its grandeur was what won the owners over 17 years ago.
“The agent said, ‘This the house for you’, and we fell in love with it as soon as we saw it,” they said.
They have loved the proximity to the beach, the city and good schools and the home has had plenty of people through it over the years.
“All of the kids’ friends have always come here and we’ve had heaps of parties and had marquees in the backyard,” the owners said.

Downstairs there is formal dining, a sitting room and a granite kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances and walk-in pantry. It extends through open plan living to alfresco dining and also has access to a private flagstone courtyard.
The home was extended in 2004 with importance placed on the addition staying true to the home’s heritage.
There is one bedroom downstairs and five, all generous in size, upstairs.
The parents’ wing has Antoinette parquetry timber flooring and a Juliet balcony plus a large ensuite.
The home has level manicured lawns. There is garaging for three cars accessed from Dawson Street.
