The ‘master tailor’ had started stitching his terrifying plot about 10 days ago. He claimed to be upset over not getting payments on time, that too piecemeal, from the high-flying fashion designer for whom he was working.

Rahul Anwar, the tailor, and two of his accomplices struck at the Vasant Kunj Enclave home of 53-year-old fashion designer Mala Lakhani around 10 in the night on Wednesday.

Later the police would find no sign of forced entry as Lakhani knew her alleged murderers quite well.

The trio first stabbed the designer, who ran a boutique at South Delhi’s Green Park. When Lakhani’s house help Bahadur, 50, tried to save her, they stabbed him too.

Then, the looting began! Till about midnight, Rahul (24), his cousin Rehmat (24) and Waseem (25) ransacked the house, stole jewellery and whatever other valuables they could lay their hands on. Their final act was to break into Lakhani’s car and drive off carrying the booty.

At 2.45 am on Thursday, the three walked into Vasant Kunj (South) police station and admitted to the double murder, following which officials rushed to the spot. The bodies of Lakhani and Bahadur were found lying in a pool of blood, with multiple stab wounds.

Ajay Chaudhary, Joint CP of New Delhi Range, said, “The murder was executed sometime between 10 and 12 last (Wednesday) night. They looted the valuables and decamped from there in Lakhani’s car. After surrendering, they narrated the whole story to the police and confessed to the crime, and then we completed the formalities.”

“The accused have kept the booty hidden at different places, and the police are carrying out raids so as to recover the looted goods,” he added.

Police said the accused had four knives with them which they had purchased from a weekly Sunday market in Vasant Kunj.

After killing Lakhani and Bahadur- a Nepalese national- the accused went to a pond behind Rangpuri Pahari area in Vasant Kunj to dispose of the knives and their clothes that had blood stains.

Devendra Arya, DCP of South-West district, said, “As they had committed a gruesome double murder, it probably created panic in their minds and hence they decided to surrender before police.”

“Lakhani has a boutique named ‘Tulsi Creation’ in Green Park and Rahul was well aware of her financial status,” the officer added.

The police have registered an FIR. All the three accused have been presented in court, after which they were sent to two days police custody.

A PTI report said that Lakhani was single and had been living in Vasant Kunj for several years. Her sister lives in Gurugram and her brother resides in Goa.
